I guess it's because I grew up with cassette tapes, portable tape players, then CDs, then Discman, then Discman with buffering.

If the software of the Data Discman had been more like Microsoft Encarta, it might have wowed people.

It's only 2x as much as a handheld Discman that has no safety interlocks at all.

My daughter has taken to vinyl for a time and now has a discman and it seems like a push back against the Illusion of Choice that music streaming “provides”.

Didn't think it would replace my iPod (or MP3 CD player, or Discman, or Walkman).

Would you consider the prior portable music market (Walkman, Discman, etc) a parallel?

I carried that album everywhere, on my Minidisc, Sony Walkman, and Sony Discman.
