My dimmable touch lamp makes an annoying high-pitched sound that is loudest on the dimmest mode.

They are Philips' non-flickering, dimmable, High CRI bulbs, yet my classic 25W halogen table lamp still provides a far better reading experience.

If you buy dimmable lamps, Philips makes some variable color temp lamps that go down to 2200K from 2700K as you dim them.

Who cares if they are dimmable, the majority of the time you don't, and the tiny savings in electricity when you do hardly matter.

Another issue is not all CFL and LED bulbs are dimmable.

They are more expensive than non-dimmable LEDs, but they work fine.

Again, the low-tech approach of blinds or curtains allows for more styling at lower cost than electronically dimmable windows, though these exist (for a price).

And the problem of getting dimmable LEDs out of an AC source is not easy, you are going to end with electronics in each led bulb anyways.

I just prefer the dimmable nature and the consistent color across the dimming.

Now that dimmable 60-watt equivalent LED bulbs have dropped into the sub-sawbuck range, I was examining the packaging at my local Home Despot store.

So if you had a dimmable incandescent bulb and replaced it with early CFLs or LEDs they were not always dimmable (and I think cost more?) andin some cases you have to buy a CFL/LED compatible dimmer.

Even more amusing is the "dimmable" bulb: traditional dimmers in AC circuits use triacs to effectively cut out (e.g.

To see how much variation a small "non-dimmable" CFL will tolerate, I just put one on a variable transformer and lowered the line voltage gradually from normal (120 Volts) downward.

I've seen extremely few LED bulbs that say they are "dimmable" and I've been looking around a fair bit as I'm transferring all the lights in the house over to LED if on-time matters and CFL if it doesn't.

Dimmable CFL bulbs are expensive and don't work well.
