daemontools-encore

Really, daemontools-encore should imo be called daemontools 1.x, but you know how djb feels about forks of his projects...

Bruce Guenter's daemontools-encore [4] expands on daemontools with backwards-compatible changes including extra service states (besides just up and down).

Granted, there are probably packages that already run daemontools, runit or daemontools-encore as a child under the existing system init.

This info is out of date, daemontools-encore 1.10 is in the FreeBSD ports tree [2].

Like runit, daemontools-encore can now run services in separate process groups with setsid(1).

If you use daemontools-encore though, you can just use `setuidgid -s` instead.

One nice daemontools-encore feature not mentioned here: support for multiprocess services.

Then use the Ubuntu-packaged runit or daemontools; or port s6, perp, daemontools-encore, or nosh.

You'd install runit, s6 or daemontools-encore rather than plain daemontools.

From your other comments I can tell you're a seasoned daemontools user, so let me just put in a quick plug for daemontools-encore [1].

Bernstein's daemontools, Adam Sampson's freedt, and Bruce Guenter's daemontools-encore do not, strictly speaking (and pace Paul Jarc's patches), have a program for running as process #1.

Daemontools-encore is a fork with minor feature updates, and there's also a whole ecosystem of choices like Runit, S6, and nosh to look at if you're really interested.
