It's quite an effective strategy, and some guys like John Flynt (aka Brianna Wu) make quite a good living of it seemingly.

For example, suppose a bunch of gamergate types were to complain about Brianna Wu giving a purely technical talk about pathfinding and AI.

Gamergate targeted women in the video game industry, most notably feminist media critic Anita Sarkeesian and video game developers Zoë Quinn and Brianna Wu.

That said, Brianna is extremely inflammatory and vitriolic in her speech.

I'd like to thank Brianna for writing this and keeping it in the media.

If Brianna Wu could actually deliver a technical talk, I say let her.

I specifically said celebrating those things; Brianna Wu's dog died of natural causes.

We could look at people like Brianna Wu and Anita Sarkeesian, who I feel confident we'll agree have experienced massive and credible death threats.

I think Brianna Wu is kind of personally odious and is being as vocal and visible as she is to help raise her own profile.

They'll also never release Brianna Manning.

That's why the likes of Sarkeesian, Chelsea Van Valkenburg (aka Zoe Quinn) and John Walker Flynt (aka Brianna Wu) use them, and that's why the NYTs of this world print them.

For example, here is the latest post from Brianna Wu, the most vocal advocate of women's rights in the gamer community: "Let’s speak plainly.

If Randi, Anita, and Brianna weren't anonymous but they were "doxed" it seems to me that "doxing" doesn't have to refer to revealing info of an anonymous person.

I can't find the article now, but I remember a quote by Brianna Wu expressing frustration at having the characters of her game said to be "promoting anorexia" because of their wispy tall character designs (just recently she ended up changing them in the PC port of her game, in fact, after endless criticism.) The characters are exaggerated, but honestly to the point that they (intentionally) aren't realistic.

The go-to person for this on social media, "Brianna Wu", also seems to think the answer to discrimination is with more discrimination in her favor (her company is all female, the games she creates are designed only for females, and she talks about both of these facts as a "good thing" all the time).

Notice how quickly the #gamergate contingent dropped that to go back to talking how Anita/Zoe/Brianna totally deserved it and how gamers are being oppressed by a vast SJW conspiracy?

I was naive enough to think that if I provided enough context about my background to counter the main tactics that the GamerGate supporters were using against Anita, Zoe, and Brianna, that they might listen.
