Grady Booch first published the Booch method around '91.

One of the authors, Ivar Jacobson, is behind UML (together with Grady Booch & James Rumbaugh).

You know, TDD is somewhat controversial, but design-by-numbers GoF patterns aren't: you might as well be busting out UML or the Booch Method.

Not everything was bad about waterfall, RUP, UML, Booch and related methods.

I lived through this period and remember being attracted to Booch notation and similar early efforts (as well as GoF patterns, etc.).

I spent a year and a half working at Rational with Grady Booch on the first two releases of Rose (for my sins).

I first encountered him with this book: Designing object-oriented C++ applications using the Booch method and really liked: Agile Software Development: Principles, Patterns and Practices.

Labrosse (uC/OS-II by the same author includes the source to the prior version of the OS) - Doing Hard Time, Grady Booch - Operating System Concepts, Silbershatz, Galvin, Gagne There are other good books on the subject.

I'm not going to try to give examples of good or bad code in either category...but, will point out that Haskell is not an OO language (in the Grady Booch sense of OO, though you can encapsulate methods in data because it has first class functions), but there's an awful lot of beautiful and correct Haskell code out there.

When I finally spoke up, I asked "What's software architecture?" Booch pondered for a moment and then said "Software architecture is what software architects create." Pop.

RUP and UML happened around the same time as XP, in 1998, but it was the culmination of a decade of so-called "object oriented methodologies" being discussed between Booch, Rumbaugh, and Jacobsen.

I just pulled Grady Booch's "Software Engineering with Ada" C 1987, and it does have 8 pages on OO, but all it is talking about is packaging and encapsulation - the word "object" is not really defined.

Pretty much, just as Booch's philosophy has given us tangled messes of class hierarchies with cross references pointed every which way.

It combined the methodologies of many of the leading OO proponents of the time, including Grady Booch, Ivar Jacobson, and James Rumbaugh.
