Some version of doumo arigato gozaimasu is really fine in most other situations!

I wouldn't say doumo in a shop unless I knew the people, and I wouldn't say arigato much with people I was close to.

Also doumo was the least formal way of saying thanks, not arigato, unless there was some other way of demonstrating appreciation in which case it might be skipped altogether.

Then meeting people, elevator, bus, just remember the most important words 'sumimasen, onegaishimasu, kudasai, hajimemashite, arigato' and you'll be welcome everywhere you go.

Arigato is inappropriate in most cases, and "Sumasen" or variations should be used.

Seeing that "obrigato" is used to say thanks kind of makes me wonder if Japanese's "arigato" has a similar etymology.

For example, most people know that "Arigato" is Japanese for "Thank you".

But if you tried to translate them via the dictionary, you'd be quite confused as arigato comes from "thank" and su(mi)masen from "to finish".

If I go up to a native Japanese speaker and tell them, "Arigato!" they'll (I hope) pat me on the head and say "You're welcome".

Heck, I can even name drop a bunch doing footwear more or less only; Axel Arigato, Icebug, Björn Borg, Eytys...
