al-khwarizmi

It is odd, given that other scientists did use Arabic characters to notate their diagrams (notably, Al-khwarizmi and Ibn Al-Haytham).

But al-Khwarizmi was presumably writing in the context of familiar quantities >= 0, which is a perfectly fine thing to do.

They were essentially the Zij of Toledo, drawing heavily on earlier zijat from the Islamic world, like those of al-Khwarizmi and al-Battani [2].

The translator's name was al-Khwarizmi, from where we get the word algorithm.

I quote from the Wikipedia article on the 9th century Persian Mathematician Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī: Some words reflect the importance of al-Khwarizmi's contributions to mathematics.

Nevertheless, the original writings were what suggested to me that the important bit of algebra was doing things to equations to change them into some easily solvable canonical form (al-Khwarizmi's work dealt primarily with quadratics).

Here is an example from Al-Khwarizmi's famous book: If the instance be, 'ten and thing to be multiplied by thing less ten,' then this is the same as 'if it were said thing and ten by thing less ten.

Al-Khwarizmi was not talking about the publisher but about the scientists actually doing the peer-reviewing work: they don't see a dime from the publisher for this work (which is normal because it is part of their job as scientist to peer-review, what is abnormal is that the result of this work is given for free to private companies who put it behind paywalls).

This title means "Algoritmi on the numbers of the Indians", where "Algoritmi" was the translator's Latinization of Al-Khwarizmi's name.

Muhammad al-Khwarizmi (who's name is bared by the "Algebra") was a prominent scholar born in a traditional Persian family (not Arabian but Muslim nevertheless).
