If you have an hour or two free, get one of those little wine aerators and do the taste test. It's a night-and-day difference.

If you have a flat sink, you need an aerator on the spigot. This doesn't solve everything, but it's a big improvement with respect to splashing.

I'd say the aerator and toy are analogous to software bugs, but the wheel bearing is a wear item. Even the best-engineered hardware has parts that wear out.

How's this different from a standard faucet aerator? Cuts down on water usage but maintains water pressure...

The 'mist' is created by the aquarium pumps and aerators in fact. If the water had poisonous substances and the aquatium does not have a cover, those could travel by the air as aerosol.

As to your other point, people are not only touching the external edges of the aerator, but the aerator itself, which water does come in contact with. Lastly, the bacteria present are not non-harmful, and a solid chunk of feces is not required to cause illness.

The person with the less severe injuries flopped with the aerator on, which is probably the only reason the injuries weren't more serious. Diving from 10m is absolutely dangerous, even for professionals, especially without an aerator.
