I'm a contributor to Aegir, and created the aegir docker containers, which default to aegir.local.computer for easy testing.

A more recent entrant is a system called Aegir which is a set of multiple modules.

When I create sites in aegir, I don't have to set any DNS if I use a subdomain of aegir.local.computer, I can just visit node/add/site and fill in the form and get a site.

I build systems (devshop/aegir) that create and destroy websites on the fly.

We use Drupal more as a framework then a plug-and-play architecture, and each band gets its own centrally managed Drupal instance with a separate database (comparable to the Aegir way).

Don't know about any YC but subhublite,acquia gardens etc do it by building a distribution(with features usually) and using aegir+ubercart for saas.

If I was back in school, Live Scribe (but only with a pen with a manual on-switch; the Aegir turns itself on too much and the battery drains fast).

Aegir let's me spin up as many copies of my project as I want for both testing + production.

I was agreeing completely with this entire post up until you mentioned Aegir.

When I wrote Aegir, a distributed turn-key automated hosting platform for Drupal sites, I had to write the logic that made sure this stuff worked.
