xelatex

If you click on the gear icon and go to Advanced Build Options, you can turn on XeLaTeX.

The whole point of XeLaTeX is fonts of course, so they and their selection (show sample) are important.

XeLaTeX allows you to use TTF fonts in your LaTeX document and minted allows you to syntax highlight code.

XeTeX and xelatex indeed do support all the wondrous diacritics and Klingon symbols of unicode fonts (TTF or OTF, no less).

Most distributions also ship xelatex, which is the LaTeX compiler of the XeTeX project.

If you like Unicode in your source (infinitely more readable and exactly the same keystrokes in Emacs) latexmk -xelatex -pvc source.tex works.

You can get much better results than that from TeX (XeLaTeX, ConTeXt, etc).

For anyone new coming to latex instead of messing with unicode bandaids and worrying about fonts they can just use xelatex/lualatex and fontspec.

Nowadays I use xelatex and actual fonts instead of staying stuck in the tex font ghetto.

Unless forced to do otherwise, I always use the memoir document class and compile with xelatex.

If you do end up going with LaTeX, I would highly recommend XeTeX/XeLaTeX so you have a larger font selection.

In the mean time, we try to auto-detect which engine to use, so if you load the fontspec package, for example, we'll automatically use XeLaTeX.

Locally I use TeXWorks with the XeLaTeX "output" and it handles it fine...
