The IC itself (aka not the wroom module etc) isn't that much more expensive than equivalently specced MCUs without a radio, and if you're already more familiar with developing for the ESP software ecosystem it might well be worth the few pennies extra.

I spend little time futzing with it as it all generally works, but obviously some minor expertise is required to make your own esp32 projects which are mostly just wiring off the shelf wroom d1 mini boards to a project board on the uart/gpio, whatever on something else.

The explanations are excellent, the outcomes interesting and it helped me to see why object orientation makes sense after fruitless attempts of understanding it using examples of different types of cars that print "wrooom wroom" to the terminal.
