My wife and I bring walkie-talkies on cruise ships, but an SMS is more discreet than a chirp and speakerphone.

Most people work outside offices, and they rely on outdated tools like SMS trees and walkie-talkies.

I guess the main difference is that walkie-talkies don't connect to your phone, or share text or GPS data.

While some technology can be very helpful (cheap walkie-talkies are a boon to constructing a large building quickly), they haven't change the cost curve dramatically.

Many intercom systems and walkie-talkies do the same.

Anything that could be directly intercepted by commonly-available radio receivers, such as car radios, walkie-talkies, police scanners, or similar would not create a reasonable expectation of privacy.

Amateur radios, walkie-talkies, CB radios, home stereos, home computers, cell phones, they did it all (except interestingly PCs they didn't do so great).

:) Yes, we think we're better/more convenient than walkie-talkies for a few reasons.

I'm 30 and during my adult life (the past decade, basically) we've gone from phones that were essentially unreliable walkie-talkies with shitty battery life to ultra fast portable computers with 10 megabit internet connections and 4 or 5 different onboard technologies (gps, camera, etc).

I was pretty surprised to find out what "high end" walkie-talkies go for.

Here in Ukraine this past winter the “designed in California” didn’t last too long during -13C..-18C nights, even with an external battery, so walkie-talkies were helpful at times.

Walkie-talkies and other independent devices can help keep crowds coordinated.
