Don't know much about tencel but the manufacturer's advertising certainly doesn't frame it as a cold/wet clothing material.

Anything with a combination of merino + lyocel (so tencel, modal, etc, there are different branded names) should be good.

I'm not sure about viscose/rayon/tencel but I imagine it's often less water-intensive but it can be pretty chemical-intensive.

I find Ibex makes the highest quality tees (their tencel/merino/nylon shirts are incredible for hot summers) and underwear.

From a quick internet search: it is one fiber used in Tencel blend.

I did have some pilling issues with the merino/tencel blend from ibex which is a shame.

It's usually blended with tencel, nylon, and/or lycra.

(The vodka trick works tho) Finally, there are also lots of wonderful new machine-washable fibres on the market -- tencel, etc.

Personally I cannot stand most wool directly on my skin, exceptions being merino and cashmere, and no wool on wet (sweating) skin, but tencel is amazing.

I’m no expert, but I think hemp, flax, and tencel are the “best” replacements in terms of sustainability.

Interesting new fabric tech such as Tencel "cotton" (from fast growth drought resistant trees such as Eucalyptus) and Piñatex leather (food waste of pineapples) are hopeful alternatives.

Natural fabrics are cotton, silk, wool and linen of course, but the semi-synthetic fabrics like the rayons (viscose, modal, "bamboo", Tencel, Lyocell, Bemberg, and some sorts of artificial silk) are wood cellulose chemically rearranged so they're just cellulose when they reach you.

Of course the production process for viscose rayons (not Tencel/Lyocell/Modal - those use a different process) isn't great.

Mizora [1] is a boutique Japanese brand producing woman's nightware out of recycled Kimono (silk) or Tencel.

Tencel looks like a great replacement for cotton and uses wood cellulose.
