Reading about 0 gravity setup immediately reminded me of the suspensors used by Vladimir Harkonnen in the Dune.

But also suspensors only seem to give lift, or very small amounts of lateral thrust.

The slides hung in sheets from suspensors, about 5 rows of eight columns per sheet.

It's possible the 'thopters use suspensors for primary lift, maybe 80% of vehicle weight, and the wings are just for manoeuvring lift and thrust.

Suspensors aren't really used for thrust, but as a way to augment or nullify the effect of gravity on an object.
