The killer innovation which will flip this is the ability to interact via hardware that takes sub-vocalisation as input.

I learnt to read aloud first, then read silently which I always remember doing by sub-vocalisation.

I would have thought if you could read by sub-vocalisation then you could talk to yourself.

In regards to speed reading I've always been under the impression it means you take in entire lines/sentences in one go rather than reading faster, skipping the sub-vocalisation step.

Possibly, other people read without sub-vocalisation which I suspect would allow you to read faster.

It was faster for me, I learned to read in Australia which apparently doens't have a very sophisticated reading education, sub-vocalisation kept us slow compared to other systems.

I always hear people saying that cutting out the sub-vocalisation allows anyone to read at high speeds, but I still say the words in my head as I go.

Interesting, I remember reading a sci-fi book a long time ago with almost exactly this same method, which they called "sub-vocalisation".
