Sparkler in a sentence as a noun

They're implying you can start the reaction with a sparkler, not that the sparkler reaction is the same.

I inserted a sparkler as a fuse, and lay it up against a large tree. I lit the sparkler and ran around to the other side to wait for the explosion.

What's a 'sparkler'? From the context, it sounds like some sort of supplementary carbonation system.
