Because I've never even heard of it outside of mycology circles, and there are virtually no Google results despite the fact that the practice is ubiquitous.

I'm also not a scientist or medical professional, so just think of me as some guy on the Internet saying "mycology is an interesting non-big-pharma industry that has bio-prospecting potential due to its anti-viral properties", and Paul Stamets is the source of that statement.

Apparently the head of the mycology department had written some article 20 years earlier in a trade journal saying that anyone who did X, Y, and Z would get an automatic in to the university, and the guy came along and did these things even though he was otherwise completely unqualified.
