If you're multiple people, plenty of startups (Kayak and Meebo come to mind) put pictures up.

If I remember correctly (I'm trying to find the document) Meebo uses a custom lighthttpd and does long polling.

Here just to say I am also a former meebo user who liked the experience.

Inbelieve meebo offers a widget that does just what you want.

It was pretty advanced stuff at the time (3-4 years ago) - I believe other in-browser chat services like Meebo used polling.

But yes--by the time I was at Meebo I was already picking up some industry coding experience, though not anywhere near what I'd have had on a more traditional CS degree + pure coding job out of school track.

Then he was a "user experience designer and engineer at Meebo." Then Instagram.

He made point after point about Meebo's failure as a service and he was dead right about all of them.

It was quite lucrative but then WebIM became a thing (a la Meebo) and the market shifted away from Desktop downloads.

Meebo, a totally open phone never got anywhere, and neither did Mozilla's phone attempts.
