Notice too that all 3 (Hinton, LeCun, and Bengio) worked directly together at some point, and collaborated often beyond that.

This presentation by LeCun actually suggests embedding neural networks inside of various types of probabilistic models: factor graphs and conditional random fields.

Geoff Hinton is British, Yann LeCun is French, Andrew Ng was born in the UK to Hong Kong parents and graduated in Singapore, Quoc Le is Vietnamese.

It is always impressive to me how both Professor LeCun, Bengio & Hinton stuck to their guns and worked on these problems while others were not so interested.

In particular LeCun and Bengio are in part responsible for the recent renewed interested in it ("Deep Learning").
