Ireful in a sentence as an adjective

This is reminiscent of banks in the UK, who come out with direful warnings that they'll end free banking every time they're forced to lower their swingeing overdraft fees.

I'm wondering if this is part of psychological coping mechanism; that the fact of our species ending is such a trauma that we - even though we cannot deny it in all honesty - have to suppress our own conciseness from realizing the direful consequences for every single person we know and love. We have to deny reality, because the implications of accepting the facts are just to painful.
