What gets me about the intermodulation effect is that some people want to have it both ways.

That term makes me think of high frequency intermodulation artifacts produced by the sample rate of an ADC (aka aliasing).

You will hear vast quantities of intermodulation--signals that aren't really there, and signals that are there that are hopelessly garbled.

Turns out, light can undergo distortion, so you can get intermodulation distortion to generate colors not present in the inputs.

Dynamic recovery behavior, intermodulation distortion, stuff like this is what gives amps their distinctive sounds - but it's nearly impossible to measure!

Even if there's very little audio-frequency attenuation, it's possible for higher frequencies to produce audio-frequency intermodulation distortion, and filtering could reduce this.

You get the rich harmonic violin/synth like tones of every string but can play full chords without any of the intermodulation products!

What people seem to struggle with most is intermodulation distortion, cross modulation, etc.

Metal is extremely hard to analyze because intermodulation products do so much.

The core of it is that speakers are bad at polyphony You can look at intermodulation measurements for some popular and affordable home speakers here.

It will not sound right without those intermodulation products.

Or an intermodulation product from some unrelated circuit.

Intermodulation distortion in chords adds "grit", and that's an inseparable part of the attitude of the music.

Intermodulation in this case is distortion that wasn't in the source material.

Intermodulation and other distortion by-products are going to be difficult to control although I have no experience with the performance of modern amps for sub-MHz frequency ranges.
