I think the gentlemen shooting bullets at the Charlie Hebdo authors contributed quite a bit to this attitude of defiance.

And if you don't want to understand it - Charlie Hebdo also published caricatures about christian religion, so it was offensive for them too, for their friends.

There has been also some shock to see lots of support for Charlie Hebdo's terrorists among muslim communities online.
