What is the compelling advantage of using github instead of gitorious or gitlab or whatever?

GnuTLS did not move, they were moved because Gitorious got acquired by gitlab.

And there are similar open sourced alternatives like GitLab and Gitorious too.

We saw gitorious, an entirely-opensource service, fail due to lack of revenue.

Between this and gitorious, I forsee a lot of dead links in the future.

As the sysadmin whose job it would otherwise be to manage Gitorious or Gitlab locally, I am delighted to be able to outsource this task.

I ask, because our company recently killed of a Gitorious instance that worked fine for ~5 years, to 'upgrade' us to TFS and there are quite some..

There's also "Gitorious" but I tried to use it once and spent two days unsuccessfully trying to get it to work.

Gitorious at one point was the official place for the unofficial FreeBSD repository and many clones.

It was prompted (in a big way) by the acquisition of Gitorious.

Gitorious has a header that informs people to migrate to Gitlab.
