It reminded me of Cialdini's "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion." I'm curious if it's also the work of a similarly calculating social psychologist.

"Yes!: 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Persuasive" by Goldstein, Margin, & Cialdini is a great book on influence and persuasion.

Some research (probably see Cialdini) shows significantly improved compliance when a question is asked that requires confirmation from the subject.

So, i basically agree that they are getting first dibs, but due little to Cialdini's rule on reciprocity.

Cialdini is a great resource for influence/negotiation in general, so look for other articles/books written by him.
