It's really depressing that such an anachronistic notion (of carrying on your family's "name") is still so prevalent that it results in tens of millions of abortions of unwanted girls.

Please enlighten me as to my definition, near as I can tell I used the adverbial form exactly as defined here: "not under the control of another; as one wishes." Were you inferring that I meant that abortions and birth control are always freely available?

There are some statements that I suspect make intuitive conclusions, and many of which I suspect are right (e.g., availability of birth control lowers the rate of abortions and unplanned pregnancies), but even those with which I agree are relegated to the portion of my mind that holds the "do not recite this" category of statistics.
