If NaN < 0 or NaN > 0, you’re giving up x > y ==> -x < -y, which to my mind is a bigger loss than trichotomy.

0, then trichotomy goes out the window, and presumably NaN ??

While I can see where you are coming from I think the false trichotomy not very valuable as an analytical device.

The home/work/third place trichotomy isn't universal in the first place, and people on the internet have exhibited plenty of evidence that they consider it every combination of the three.
