The Geometers Sketchpad was inspired and named after Sutherland's work, and has been around for quite a while.

Same reason writers tend to carry around a moleskine, or artists a sketchpad.

Except it's not really a DAW — more of a musical sketchpad.

The youtube vid was an old demonstration of Ivan Sutherland's Sketchpad software.

This is the closest thing to a digital sketchpad yet.

Later, I actually found a healthy outlet -- I brought a sketchpad to school and drew pictures when I wasn't learning anything.

This demo about sketchpad is pretty impressive, too.

That said, I go the old fashioned way for sketching out ideas: an artists sketchpad, some drafting pencils, a box of colored pencils, a straightedge, etc.

"Inventing" the GUI is a toss-up, depending on if you think NLS from Engelbart's group, or Sutherland's Sketchpad was a GUI.

I find this a surprising reaction, just because for so many devs I've known, it's common to keep a "sketchpad" interpreter open to mess about with code ideas.

Ivan Sutherland’s “Sketchpad” allowed users to draw geometric shapes with a touch-pen, pioneering the practice of “computer-assisted drafting” that has proven vital for architects, planners, and now even toddlers.

I'm sure I wasn't even the first, as I got many of my ideas from Chris Hancock's PhD thesis published in 2003, "Real time programming and big ideas in computational literacy", and of course the multitudes of less but still interactive Lisp and smaltalk environments, and fully interactive visual environments way before that (starting with sutherland's sketchpad).

Sketchpad was prototype based, simula was early class based (though they didn't use those terms yet).

If we want the next generation to be impatient for the kind of programs that we had, like Sketchpad.

However, I'd like to point out the long history of constraint systems such as Sketchpad, ThingLab, Garnet/Amulet and all the smaller/more limited variants.
