My parents had bought me a Javascript book and teach yourself c++ from Herbert Schildt from a local bookstore.

Pick up a good C++ book if you already don't have one (coursebook or Herbert Schildt or some O'Reilly book).

I didn't know of him, but I was certainly fooled by Herbert Schildt when I started getting into programming...

But I suppose Teach Yourself C by Herbert Schildt deserves a nod, as it's basically the book I first learnt programming from.

I learned C in the early 90's with one of Schildt books.

I still have a Schildt C/C++ book on my shelf.

But the bulk of it, IMO, was just reading books ( Teach Yourself C by Herbert Schildt was were it all really started for me) and working through the exercises.

I spent a long time trying to find a good C or C++ book at the time, and the C++ book I ended up buying was so much worse than Schildt as to be unmentionable.

These features were available in libraries on other platforms since forever (I remember a Herb Schildt book from 1988 that presented an implementation in C for DOS!), but were culturally ingrained in the Amiga, and are still essentially fringe in other ecosystems.

As for the book, "Java: The Complete Reference (9th Edition)" by Herbert Schildt was recently launched and covers the latest version of Java (Java 8).

Schildt plays the same game, just on a subtler, smaller, more unassuming level.

Then somehow I got hold of a shareware C compiler, and a copy of Herbert Schildt's book Teach Yourself C.

The book was useful, if you ignored Schildt's annotations, and just used it to get the text of the standard (or most of it).
