What made the Nazis' use of "Arbeit Macht Frei" so sickening in the first place was that it had been a moderately common German saying or proverb prior to that.

This is technically true, but somewhat unimportant in a discussion over whether concentration camps and torture are evil or not, and whether "Arbeit macht frei" is a genuine slogan or hypocrisy.

Its interesting to notice that those who promote a basic income here in Germany are hardcore liberals/libertarians, while conservatives, socialists, unions, communists here still follow the puritanic thinking that "Arbeit macht Frei".
