I am currently using Harman Kardon Soundsticks II w/ sub for my home audio and have no complaints -- kept this for 8 years really, so maybe I don't know what I'm missing.

A good example of different approach is laptops branded with "Harman Kardon" speakers - Harman-Kardon has a patent on exactly this but involving separate DSP running transparently to the OS.

It's a harman kardon "smart" speaker with a similar design where the brains are on a separate daughterboard and that's now fried.
