A small free tool for OS X I found useful is Sim Daltonism[1] Sim Daltonism is a color blindness simulator for Mac OS X.

In some languages, daltonism is still used to describe red-green color blindness.

From my experience as the colorblind child of native Russian speakers, it’s Daltonism (дальтони́зм).

In the simulated daltonism version Success and Warning are probably even more different than in original ones (but Warning seems a little greenish).

I’ll highlight a note from the developer: Sim Daltonism lets you see through the eyes of someone with a color blindness.

The Sim Daltonism app is great at helping with this.

Besides others mentioned, Sim Daltonism is a good OS X app for testing how an app or page's color choices will look with various forms of color blindness.

I have also found Sim Daltonism very helpful for testing out designs.

The X chromosome codes quite a few crucial proteins [0], such as certain clotting factors (that's why women rarely get haemophilia), or retinal proteins (that's why women see more colors, and rarely get daltonism).

Having a vocabulary of specific names may ease learning/training, but it seems to me, that no matter how many different words for colors you teach a child with daltonism, the child will still fail a color blindness test.

Daltonism and hemophilia are less prevalent in women for this reason.
