Chiaroscuro in a sentence as a noun

Does the chiaroscuro effect in that photo come from a torchlight procession in front of his dais?

Like all things in art, chiaroscuro has fallen in and out of fashion over the centuries.

To pontificate that "oh, they evolved denial, problem solved" is to throw white paint over a breathtaking chiaroscuro.

An "old masters" chiaroscuro typically uses burnt umber plus a warm blue, such as aquamarine, for the great lake of "blackness" from which everything else emerges.

But at the same time, I wonder whether that effort couldn't be spent on something more worthwhile -- such as defining oneself on one's own terms, rather than by a weird chiaroscuro of ideals hit and missed.
