What people need is a self-hosted, open source API that's as usable as chargebee or recurly, for instance.

S We're using ChargeBee (www.chargebee.com) to handle our subscription billing management and we're writing some minors scripts to automate our user layer based on the payment status.

What's the general feeling here on using only Stripe for recurring/subscriptions vs adding something like ChargeBee on top of Stripe?

Does this target a specific niche or another version of Recurly, Chargify or ChargeBee?

Approaching this issue as an Australian startup the easiest solution I found was to use Chargebee and Worldpay.

The Chargebee guys in particular are lovely, but for a recent project I went with plain old Stripe for a few reasons.

If you need a better API and simpler way to integrate with 2Checkout.com along with multiple payment gateway options down the line, you can use ChargeBee.

The problem with subscription startups like chargebee, recurly, etc.

Many people look at Open Source and say "Why would I pay ChargeBee or Recurly $300 or $3000 per month when this is free?" Seems like a no brainer.

There's no reason that Chargebee, Recurly could not be emulated in open source software.

From a risk perspective, using a solution like Chargebee, that integrates with multiple merchant accounts (including Braintree), is a much better choice.

One good option is Chargebee, which integrates with 12+ different gateways.
