Here are Dr. Justyna’s six tips for a healthier you going into the holidays: 1. Eat five small, balanced meals a day, every three to four hours. If you stay satisfied – not hungry and not full – your blood sugar and metabolism will stabilize, allowing your body to operate most efficiently. Don’t skip meals; it puts your body in starvation mode. 2. Always eat breakfast within an hour of waking up. This snaps your body out of night-time starvation mode and kick-starts your metabolism for the day. 3. Include complete protein with every meal, balanced with small amounts of healthy fat and carbohydrates. Protein helps you feel full longer and prevents blood sugar spikes. Choose nutrient dense foods like fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, brown rice, and lean protein. Vegetarian sources of complete protein include quinoa, hemp, and soy. 4. Keep healthy meals and snacks easily available. If you can grab something that’s good for you, it can help prevent you from making a poor impulse choice. It will also be more satisfying and keep you feeling energized. 5. Drink green tea. It’s a great way to warm up as the weather gets colder, and the anti-oxidants in green tea will help rev your metabolism and aid in fat-burning. 6. Exercise. The holiday season gets so busy – make time to walk for 30 minutes every day. This will burn calories and keep your metabolism humming, and walking has loads of other benefits. It has been shown to reduce fatigue, depression and anxiety – just what you need when the pressures of the holidays start to mount.

The benefits of delaying umbilical cord clamping and leaving the cord attached to your baby until it is completely drained of nutrient rich blood are now becoming known again. It usually takes 5-60 minutes for the cord to stop pulsing; until then the cord should not be clamped or cut unless there is an emergency. Even during a caesarean section most doctors will wait 1-3 minutes if you ask – during this time just 180 seconds can change your baby’s life. During the pulsing stage, the placenta is still providing your baby with up to 64ml of iron rich blood that is plentiful in important post-birth hormones, stem cells and T cells and other vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Placental hormones are known to help facilitate the mother/baby bonding process in the weeks after birth. Delaying in cord clamping has also been scientifically linked to higher iron levels in infants at 6 months of age.

Weekly Health Topic: Will eating carrots improve my vision? Carrots are rich in carotenoids which our bodies convert to Vitamin A once ingested. The most widely known carotenoid is beta carotene. This nutrient is necessary for the normal functioning and protection of many tissues in the body including the retina. Deficiencies of vitamin A can lead to night blindness and severe dry eye, but doses exceeding the RDA have not proven to improve eyesight. Eating brightly colored vegetables such as green leafy vegetables, corn, mangoes, and sweet potatoes provides healthy doses of beta carotene. However, the highest doses are indeed found in carrots. In fact, ½ a cup of boiled carrots has twice the RDA of Vitamin A needed for a whole day!

Eating more plant protein is the key to increasing our micronutrient intake. It is interesting to note that foods such as peas, green vegetables, and beans have lots of protein—even more protein per calorie than meat. But what is generally considered is that foods that are rich in plant protein are generally the foods that are richest in nutrients and phytochemicals. By eating more of these high-nutrient, low-calorie foods, we get plenty of protein, and our bodies get flooded with protective micronutrients simultaneously. Animal protein does not contain antioxidants and phytochemical; plant protein does. Plus, animal protein is married to saturated fat. Excesses of saturated fat are not favorable to good health.

Oxygen, or you can call it Vitamin O, is actually more important than any other nutrient. The food you eat is metabolized in direct relation to how much oxygen is in your blood. Enzymes rely on the presence of Oxygen to function correctly. And enzymes work to break down the food you eat. You need more than food to feed your body.
